My Dear Mittens

rebecca buckle

I’ve a new mitten pattern ready for sale, these are “My Dear Mittens”, a play on words and a design inspired by my yarn store Dýr Yarns. The basic shape of these mittens are inspired by the Selbu mittens of Norway. Selbu mittens have a long history in Norway, often knitted for loved ones and sweethearts, full of symbolism and tradition. I’ve long been inspired by the knitting of the scandinavian countries,so it seemed apt that the first pattern designed exclusively for the website should be a traditional scandinavian one. These mittens are knitted in Flora, a lovely 4lpy alpaca blend from Norwegian yarn company Drops. These are a great winter to spring mitten that will keep you warm on frosty mornings. If you fancy knitting a pair for yourself head over to to pick up a copy of the pattern.

New Beginnings.

Here we are, today is the today that the shop goes live. It’s been an exciting time for me in the last few months all stemming from the original idea to bring good quality Nordic yarns to the UK.

The dream for Dýr Yarns began a few years ago on a holiday to Iceland. I was blown away by the quality of the yarns I could get and how little they cost compared to the yarns I could get at home. I wanted one place to shop all these quality, low cost brands without having to wade through low quality acrylics to get the same value.

So why the name? Dýr (pronounced deer) is a Norse word that still exists within the modern Scandinavian languages meaning deer or animal (except in Faroese where it means door!), it can also be used as dear or precious, so what better way to describe wool as coming from precious animals.

Over the coming months we’ll be adding more brands, more accessories and several felting wools, along with product reviews, instructional videos and catch-ups with my own crafting projects. If you want to be kept up to date with all that’s going on and exclusive discounts subscribe on the website.
